President Donald Trump has effectively closed the door on any negotiated exit for Iran’s government, demanding unconditional surrender as American and Israeli military forces intensify their campaign across the Middle East. The statement, made via social media and reinforced by remarks at the White House, leaves Tehran with few diplomatic options and enormous military pressure.

The latest round of strikes has been among the most intense since the conflict began seven days ago. US B-2 stealth bombers dropped dozens of massive penetrating bombs on Iran’s underground missile infrastructure. A large Iranian naval ship used as a drone platform was struck and possibly sunk. Israeli forces simultaneously unleashed heavy strikes across Lebanon, forcing more than one million people to flee their homes in a single day.

Iran retaliated with a broad missile and drone campaign targeting US military bases and energy infrastructure across the Gulf. Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain all reported incoming fire, with several attacks intercepted and others reaching their targets. In Bahrain, missiles struck hotels and a residential building. In Lebanon, Hezbollah continued its rocket barrage against northern Israel, wounding five Israeli soldiers with anti-tank fire.

The war has produced a grave humanitarian situation. The Dahiyeh district of southern Beirut, a densely populated area that serves as a Hezbollah stronghold, was effectively abandoned after Israeli evacuation orders. Red Cross workers described chaos and despair as families fled with nothing. Iran’s internet coverage dropped to around 1%, leaving much of the country cut off from information. An airstrike on a girls’ school in Iran killed more than 100 students, in what US investigators believe may have been an American strike.

The geopolitical reverberations have been wide. The UK announced it was deploying additional Royal Air Force fighters to support allies in the region. The UN’s human rights chief pleaded for de-escalation. Iranian worshippers gathered for Friday prayers in a show of defiance, mourning their slain supreme leader. And Trump told reporters he wanted to help choose Iran’s next leader, calling the front-runner “a lightweight” and expressing preference for someone committed to harmony and peace.
