Türkiye has pledged to extend its disaster health management expertise globally, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in safeguarding lives during significant emergencies. Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu, speaking at the World Health Organization (WHO) Ministerial Conference in Istanbul, emphasized that earthquakes present a universal challenge that necessitates scientific cooperation and global solidarity. This conference, centered on “Protecting Health in Earthquakes – Strengthening Health Security Through Earthquake Emergency Management,” convened representatives from around 40 countries to discuss strategies for enhancing disaster readiness and fortifying healthcare systems against earthquakes and other crises.
Drawing from Türkiye’s substantial experience in disaster response, Memişoğlu highlighted the nation’s efforts following the catastrophic earthquakes of February 2023. During these events, over 138,000 healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and support staff were mobilized. The country executed one of its most extensive medical evacuation operations, successfully relocating more than 51,000 patients to facilities beyond the disaster-stricken areas while swiftly setting up field hospitals and emergency medical centers.
Türkiye has made considerable advancements in its healthcare infrastructure through investments in robust hospitals, emergency medical services, digital health systems, and air ambulance operations. The development of the GÖKBEY ambulance helicopter, designed for providing intensive care in challenging terrains during disasters, was also showcased by the minister. Additionally, the establishment of National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE) has further bolstered the nation’s emergency response capabilities.
Looking towards future challenges, Türkiye is intensifying its disaster preparedness, particularly for a possible major earthquake in the Marmara region. The country has introduced a thorough earthquake preparedness model, featuring what is described as the world’s first Public Health Services in Earthquakes Guide. This guide includes detailed response strategies for Istanbul and other areas at high risk. Memişoğlu reiterated Türkiye’s dedication to aiding disaster-affected nations by offering its expertise, trained personnel, and emergency response resources, emphasizing that facing large-scale disasters requires collective effort.
