Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been congratulated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for leading the longest-serving government in the history of the Italian Republic. Erdoğan commended Meloni for reaching this significant milestone and expressed optimism about the continued strengthening of ties between Türkiye and Italy. Meloni’s government, which began in October 2022, surpassed the previous record of 1,412 consecutive days in office set by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s administration from 2001 to 2005, marking 1,413 days in power.
Since becoming Italy’s first female prime minister, Meloni has fostered a close relationship with Erdoğan, with both leaders engaging in frequent discussions on various bilateral and regional matters. The cooperation between Türkiye and Italy has been directed towards expanding partnerships in several key areas, including trade, investment, defense, energy, and migration. Both nations have also coordinated their efforts regarding regional challenges, notably in Libya and Ukraine.
In April 2025, Erdoğan and Meloni co-chaired the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit held in Rome. During this summit, several agreements were signed, aimed at bolstering the strategic and economic partnership between the two countries. This event highlighted the commitment of both leaders to enhance collaboration across multiple sectors.
Most recently, Meloni and Erdoğan met during the NATO summit in Ankara in July. There, they reaffirmed their intentions to escalate trade, boost mutual investments, and deepen cooperation in defense and other strategic areas. This meeting underscored the ongoing efforts of both nations to solidify their partnership and address common strategic interests.
