The mayor of Minneapolis delivered a forceful declaration of support for the city’s Somali population in response to credible reports of imminent large-scale immigration enforcement operations. Speaking at a hastily organized press conference, local leaders emphasized their commitment to protecting all residents regardless of immigration status or ethnic background.

Federal plans reportedly involve deploying approximately 100 immigration agents from various locations across the nation to form strike teams for coordinated enforcement actions. These operations would primarily target Somali nationals with existing deportation orders, representing an unprecedented concentration of enforcement resources in the metropolitan area.

The enforcement surge comes amid inflammatory presidential rhetoric specifically targeting Somali immigrants and a congressional representative of Somali heritage. During a cabinet meeting, the administration’s leader used derogatory language to characterize the community and expressed desires to remove Somali immigrants from the country.

Criminal cases involving benefit fraud by several dozen Somali residents have provided political justification for the enforcement escalation. These prosecutions, spanning multiple years, involve allegations of false claims for government assistance programs, though they represent a tiny fraction of the region’s 80,000-person Somali population.

City officials stressed that Minneapolis police maintain strict separation from federal immigration enforcement and receive no advance notice of such operations. The mayor warned that targeting people based on Somali appearance would inevitably result in wrongful detention of American citizens and violations of constitutional due process protections.
