In an effort to address the growing presence of AI-created music, Spotify is implementing new strategies to label and manage AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, these artists will be marked with an “AI persona” label on both their profiles and track listings. This initiative aims to help listeners differentiate between authentic human performers and those created through artificial intelligence, while also safeguarding the exposure of genuine musicians who might otherwise be overshadowed by AI content.
Spotify’s approach includes the exclusion of AI personas from personalized recommendations by default. By taking this step, the company seeks to maintain clarity for users who are increasingly interested in knowing the origins of the music they are hearing. The platform will allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated, but it will also employ human reviewers and advanced AI tools to identify those that do not self-report.
The decision comes amid a rapid increase in AI-generated music. The company has previously noted the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the vast influx of artificial and often low-quality content into digital music libraries. This highlights the necessity for platforms like Spotify to adopt measures that maintain the integrity and quality of the music streaming experience.
With the proliferation of generative AI in the music industry, transparency is becoming a critical concern. Listeners are increasingly interested in understanding whether the tracks they enjoy are the work of human artists or artificial constructs. Spotify’s move to clearly label AI-generated music reflects a broader trend towards openness and accountability in how digital content is curated and presented to audiences worldwide.
