In a strategic move to harness its thorium resources for advanced nuclear technologies, Türkiye has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Copenhagen Atomics, a Danish company specializing in nuclear technology. This collaboration, driven by the Türkiye Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK), aims to explore the potential of thorium-based innovations, particularly in the realm of molten salt reactors, which represent a sophisticated frontier in nuclear technology.
The partnership will concentrate on the creation of nuclear-grade thorium compounds within Türkiye, a development expected to enhance the country’s capabilities in producing essential materials for next-generation reactors. By engaging Turkish technology firms, industrial entities, and researchers, the collaboration seeks to foster an environment ripe for breakthroughs in nuclear technology and to establish a strong domestic foundation for thorium utilization.
Copenhagen Atomics brings to the table its innovative “Onion Core” modular reactor design, a fourth-generation molten salt reactor technology. An integral part of the agreement involves the evaluation of Türkiye’s research facilities, workforce, and industrial strengths to determine the compatibility and potential integration of this cutting-edge technology. The Danish company’s expertise is anticipated to play a crucial role in advancing Türkiye’s nuclear ambitions.
Türkiye’s drive towards expanding its nuclear energy capacity is underscored by its goals to establish a total of 20 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2050, which includes both large-scale reactors and small modular reactors. The country’s inaugural nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, is set to feature four reactors with a combined output of 4,800 megawatts. The collaboration with Copenhagen Atomics is seen as a significant step toward reducing Türkiye’s reliance on imported nuclear fuel, given the abundance of thorium within its borders.
