Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of Türkiye’s Parliament, has indicated that a forthcoming disarmament initiative involving the PKK and its associated groups might foster stability in Iraq and aid wider peace efforts throughout the region. During discussions with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heybet Halbusi in Ankara, Kurtulmuş suggested that this process, anticipated to commence next month, could play a significant role in enhancing peace and stability within Iraq and contribute positively to security dynamics in Syria.
Kurtulmuş connected this initiative to Türkiye’s broader goals of establishing a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region,” emphasizing the necessity for increased cooperation between regional countries and the resolution of enduring divisions. He also underscored the strengthening ties between Türkiye and Iraq, citing the agreements and memorandums achieved during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2024 visit to Iraq. Further strategic agreements were also highlighted, which came as a result of the Iraqi prime minister’s visit to Türkiye in July.
Another pivotal area of collaboration identified by Kurtulmuş is the Development Road Project. This ambitious transport corridor is planned to boost connectivity between Asia and Europe, passing through Iraq and Türkiye, and aims to support economic growth across the region. Kurtulmuş expressed Türkiye’s full support for expediting this project, with hopes that all aspects can become operational promptly.
Describing the initiative as more than just an economic venture, Kurtulmuş outlined its potential to link communities, cities, and cultures through mutually advantageous cooperation. He stressed that such projects could serve as a bridge, fostering stronger social and cultural ties alongside economic benefits, thus contributing to broader regional stability and prosperity.
