In response to recent statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump about the United States having control over Greenland, Finnish leaders have expressed their disagreement. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, along with Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, have both made it clear that the future of Greenland should be determined by Denmark and Greenland alone.
Following Trump’s comments at the NATO summit, Stubb emphasized that Greenland’s status is a decision strictly for Denmark and Greenland to make. Meanwhile, Valtonen reiterated Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s sovereignty over its territories, underscoring that such matters are internal to the Kingdom of Denmark.
Valtonen further highlighted the importance of addressing Arctic security through established defense partnerships rather than pursuing territorial ambitions. She pointed out that Denmark and the United States are in ongoing discussions about defense collaboration, while NATO is actively working to enhance security measures throughout the Arctic region.
Greenland, a self-governing entity under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Denmark, has become a focal point in discussions among European nations, particularly concerning security, sovereignty, and stability in the Arctic.
